About The Program

North Fraser (Community Futures Development Corporation of North Fraser (www.northfraser.org) administers the Self Employment Program in the areas from Surrey to Hope.

How Does The Program Work?

Our 'business start-up' program emphasis is on a one-to-one mentoring and coaching model supplemented by group management skills workshops and individual follow-up financial counselling.

The Training Program

This is a 40-week program with a continuous intake. During the business concept viability phase the applicant receives one-on-one counselling while he/she conducts a comprehensive market research process. When market viability has been demonstrated, an application is made for acceptance to the program. Upon acceptance, the financial grant (40 weeks) support begins. The client has up to ten weeks to complete the business plan to be considered for continuation beyond the initial 10-weeks. When the marketing, and business plans are completed and approved there is a series of workshops where small business management skills are taught. The client continues to receive financial and marketing mentoring for a period of time.

Who May Apply?

  • The Full SE Program - including HRDC (EI) financial assistance is available to anyone currently unemployed or an exhaustee (unemployed but former regular EI claim was in last 3 years or maternity claim in last 5 years).
  • Persons able to demonstrate market viability of the business idea, develop a business plan they are capable of implementing.

Application and Selection ProcessS

Attend an info session. These are offered bi-weekly in Langley, Mission and Chilliwack. Call the local Community Futures office for dates and times.

Selection Criteria

The completed business plan is presented to a local review panel who approve enrollment into the program.
